Mercy’s life changed forever when she discovered that not only is she a witch, but that she was born to rid the world of vampires once and for all.

After a year of intense training to hone her powers, she and her coven are pulled into a murder case in her hometown of East Greenwich. The coven, with the help of a friend with direct ties to the investigation, discovers that a vampire attack claimed the victim’s life. Mercy suspects the killer belongs to a new clan in town, The Black Horse, and goes undercover in the vampire underworld. There, she’ll discover dark, long-hidden secrets and face her father from her previous life, who she learns is the leader of this ruthless undead.

New relationships will develop, friendships will be tested, and lives will be lost.

As Mercy draws closer to finding the killer, a villain from her past creeps out of the shadows. Maurice, centuries-old vampire, is thirsty for revenge after her coven took down his clan.

The Chosen Coven will now have to combine the forces of the Universal Elements, to fight the darkness that falls on their city.

This will be a three-book series. It is recommended to read book one, ‘The Dark Awakening’ before reading book two. Their final battle will conclude in book three, and will be released in the fall of 2019 or spring of 2020

My Review:

This is the fantastic follow up book to The Dark Awakening, book one in the Chosen Coven series and they must be read in order. If you loved the first book as much as I did then you will be blown away by this follow up. If you have read my review for the first book you will know the basic idea of the book and who the main characters are and this review will contain spoilers if you have not read the first review or book. This book contains even more drama, suspense and heartbreak.

The Dark Underworld is set almost a year after the events of the first book and everyone has moved on with their lives, after Mercy cast her spell to forget about her feelings for both Caleb and Dorian. She is no longer the innocent girl who is in the dark about her life as she was in the first book. She is now a cold warrior who is focused on her powers and getting revenge.

Riley is now dating his pack member Amber and they are at Brown University together but have promised Mercy pack support when needed. Cami has been left mentally effected after being possessed by Kylan and needs to be cared for full-time in an institution. Her other human friends have moved away for school after struggling with the idea that the supernatural world exists. Caleb lives with his family who have now been made human and he is trying to move on with his life by dating the medical examiner Melissa, who helps them with supernatural autopsies. While Caleb cares for Melissa it is obvious that his heart still belongs to Mercy and he is struggling to deal with her decision to cast the spell. Dorian is living with his shifter friend Noah and has no physical contact with Mercy, only keeping in touch by occasional text as she requested. But it is obvious that Dorian does not want to forget and move on. Mercy lives with the remaining members of her coven but does not let them in and tries to do everything by herself. Joel and his husband have moved nearer so that he can be there for Lily and Mercy and to help her with her training. Lily has also moved on and has found a new boyfriend Bradley. He is kind, cute and cares so much for Lily but he does not know anything about the supernatural world. However, can people be part of that world and not find out the truth?

Knowing that her blood can make vampires human, Mercy is on the hunt and gives bad vampires a choice; she will either turn them human or kill them. But the vampires who are not hurting anyone, they agree to form a truce and if the vampires do not kill then neither will Mercy. But the evil in the town and the killings continues and evidence leans towards the vampires again. Mercy suspects that Maurice, the evil vampire clan leader that they defeated in book one, is seeking his revenge and is responsible for the deaths. But is he really responsible for the deaths or is there another threat in their town.

Mercy was a very difficult character to understand in this book. After taking away her feelings she was obviously very cold towards both Caleb and Dorian, but she could not understand why they were so hurt by her actions. She came across very irrational at times and it was very much her way or the high way. Despite being the most inexperienced and part of a very powerful coven, she is very set in her opinions and jumps into things by herself without thinking things through. But I think it is obvious that she is going through a very rough time and struggling with the power that she has and her erratic actions are as a result of her pain.

One of the things that is did struggle with when reading this book is that there seemed to be lots of different creatures and characters being introduced. At times I found it difficult to keep up with all the different introductions, but maybe that was just something that I found when reading. I think to create a whole supernatural world, a lot of characters are needed to make it realistic so this may have been an unavoidable problem.

Overall, this is a fantastic book that is filled with lots of drama, angst, violence and lust. What I loved is that no matter how much I read, I do not know which of the boys Mercy will end up with. I literally change my mind constantly and that is a true talent created by D.L. Blade. It is obvious that Mercy shares a strong bond with Caleb and that their love is very strong. But with Darian they are full of heat and passion. Even after casting the spell to forget her emotions, their chemistry is still palpable and cannot be erased. I hate to pick sides because I love them both but if I am being honest Dorian gets my vote. He is brooding, kind and incredibly sexy. He cares for Mercy and wants to be with her but most importantly he treats her as his equal rather than telling her what to do.

I know that there is going to be a third book in the series, so I knew there would be some unresolved issues. But, my word, I cannot express how much D.L. Blade killed me with this cliff-hanger. It literally left me with my mouth hanging open and grasping for more, so I hope I don’t have to wait too long until book three is available. This whole series has been fantastic so far and I have loved being dragged into the supernatural world of the Chosen Coven. But there is no denying how great this book is and that it has left me twisted up and desperate for the next book!

Violence and mild language.

This will be a three-book series. This is the first book in The Chosen Coven Trilogy. Book two is called The Dark Underworld.

My Review:

This is the first book in a fantastic paranormal series. It is full of witches, vampires, demons and werewolves. This book will pull you in to a whole new world and leave you craving so much more. You are guaranteed to be taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you dive further into this fantastic paranormal world.

Up until recently Mercy’s life was completely normal. Her best friends Shannon and Cami are cheerleaders along with Mercy and they are popular at school. Riley is her best friend and has had feelings for Mercy for a long time but they are taking things slowly. Until one day Mercy’s life is turned upside down when her mum tries to kill her and everything changes. She goes to live with her Aunt Lily but is left crippled with anxiety, struggling to allow anyone near and refuses to let Riley touch her. She is trying to hold on until she graduates in two weeks’ time. Meanwhile, her nights are stolen by a gorgeous boy who she cannot stop dreaming of, but she is falling in love with him the more she sees.

After feeling like she is constantly being followed Mercy ends up in a car accident and is pulled out by a gorgeous young guy who doesn’t stick around long afterwards. But what is equally as strange is that Mercy was sure the car accident resulted in her leg being broken, and yet by the times she realises the boy has left, she doesn’t even have a scratch on him. When the mystery man finally introduces himself as Caleb he opens Mercy’s eyes to a whole world that she didn’t even know exists.

Mercy discovers that she is a witch, but not just any, she is a Chosen One. In the past an angel blessed five families in Salem with a child who could wield their family element of earth, air, water, fire or spirit, better than anyone. Then other witches could draw strength from the Chosen ones. Their destiny is to band together as a coven and become immortal to give witches their power for all eternity. But before they could be joined as immortal Mercy died leaving the coven incomplete. Caleb, another Chosen One, has loved Mercy for centuries and will stop at nothing to bring her back. He tried with all of her past blood relatives but was not able to succeed until now.

Mercy’s mother knew her child was a powerful old soul and promised to raise Mercy and teach her how to harness her powers. Caleb promised to stay away until her 18th birthday, which is when a witch comes into their true powers, as it is not safe for a child to have that level of power. But Mercy’s mum could feel the power and that became addictive until she decided to keep the powers. But when Mercy experiences her awakening on her 18th birthday her mum will automatically lose the powers as they return to Mercy. So her mum will go to extreme lengths to make sure the awakening doesn’t happen.

Not only does Mercy have a whole new world and a murderous mother to live with, there is also vampires, werewolves, her current human life and a whole set of past memories to deal with. Mercy has to figure out who she was and who she is now, then work out how to combine that to make her someone strong enough to defeat the evil that is rising.

But on top of all the supernatural drama runs a very normal teenage love story, or rather a love triangle. Mercy has been in love with Caleb for years but in the past their parents objected to their relationship and they had to stop seeing each other. Caleb obeyed their parents and didn’t fight for Mercy. The same day this happens she meets a young, gorgeous vampire called Dorian, who also happens to be the guy who is haunting modern Mercy’s dreams. Dorian is kind and loving and he does not want to be a vampire. The more time that they spend together the more they fall in love and it develops into a strong and powerful love. But in this lifetime, Mercy is confused by her feelings and is unsure who she loves or who she should choose. She feels like her job in this life is to keep her loved ones safe and rid the world of the evil that threatens them. But can she do this and fall in love at the same time?

Overall, I really loved this book. It is very different from what I normally read but its dark, dangerous and gripping. As new characters, species and timelines are introduced, it is done in a very impressive way. Sometimes when reading paranormal books it is difficult to follow the plot and character species, but not this book. The writing style is clever and easy to follow. The characters are interesting and thoroughly unique. It is very clear there are more books in the series and this book ending definitely sets up the start of the next book. But I still finished the book with my mouth wide open in shock and I cannot wait to read the next book. I am sure it will be a fantastic sequel but this book has set an extremely high standard for it to follow.

Winning His Omega (The Legion Omega Series Book 3) by Leann Ryans

Book Blurb:

*** Science Fiction Action Adventure Omegaverse Romance*** This is a slow burn story.
Red is a strong-willed omega who isn’t afraid to be herself and doesn’t want anyone’s charity or protection.

Rainor was a playboy who’s feeling the urge to settle down and something about Red keeps drawing him. He can’t resist scaring off any male that gets close to her. If he cant have her, no one can.

When the ship they’re on gets hijacked by pirates, they have to rely on each other to win control of it back. Will it finally break the stalemate between them?

This is Book 3 in the Sci-fi Omegaverse series, The Legion Omegas. This book does not end on a cliffhanger and can be read as a standalone, though it will make more sense if read after Book 2, Saving the Omegas. This book has mature content and is intended for an adult audience.

My Review:

What can I say about this book series by Leann Ryans other than to say that it just keeps getting better and better. If you have read my reviews of the two earlier books in the series then you will know I was an Omegaverse virgin when I read the first book but now have become a big fan. I thought that I had loved the other two books so much but Winning His Omega was a home run for me beating the other two without even trying and I could not put this book down.

Rainor has been a firm favourite of mine in the last two books with his cocky, bad-boy smirk and funny personality but there is so much more to him. He co-owns the mine development with Zander and cares not just about the business but the people that work for him. Having been in the military for years he knows how to handle himself and protect those that he cares about. He has a reputation for being a ladies man but has no intention of getting serious or settling down. He has never been drawn to an Omega for anything other than sex. But all of that changes when a feisty mechanic Omega called Red moves to the mines and everyone wants a piece of her, which for the first time ever makes Rainor jealous.

Red hasn’t had an easy life. Her mother died when she was very young leaving her to be raised by her father and two Alpha brothers. Not knowing any other way they raised her to be strong and independent with more Alpha qualities than Omega and she soon becomes the best mechanic that they have. But after they tragically are killed she is left into the care of her drunk, gambler Uncle who quickly loses everything that once belonged to Red. Seeing no way out he decides to sell his most prized possession – him Omega niece, which is how Red finds herself getting captured in Book Two, Saving The Omegas. When she settles in the mines and begins work as their mechanic it gives her a sense of home and belonging that she has not felt in a very long time. So she cannot risk her place there by acting on the feelings she has for her gorgeous, possessive boss Rainor. But when just the two of them need to go on a week-long supply run and things do not quite go to plan they are literally thrown together with only each other to rely upon. Are they able to deny their feelings and do they even want to?

I loved Red and Rainor’s relationship so much. It blossomed in such a natural way and it was just what I wanted to see. It was obvious from the moment they met that they had chemistry that sizzled off the page but neither know how to handle their feelings and Rainor in particular went about things the wrong way. But watching him realise his feelings for Red and grow up along the way as he makes her his priority is so great to see. I also loved Red’s sassy attitude and the fact she is the furthest to a submissive Omega that you could possibly get but that is exactly what Rainor needs and is attracted to. The push and pull quality that they have is exactly what is needed and why their relationship works so well. In a normal Alpha/Omega relationship you tend to get the Alpha demanding to mate and not wanting to let go but here the decision to mate is a joint one. Rainor doesn’t want Red to regret something that happens in a hormone fuelled heat but instead he wants her to actually choose him with no doubts. That for me was the final hurdle and I was signing up to mate with Rainor there and then! Red really stood no chance at all of resisting Rainor.

Overall, I loved this book and it is a great addition to the series. With the development of the mining town there is potential to bring in new characters constantly to keep the Legion Omega series going, which is what I hope Leann Ryans plans on doing. Although the past books have introduced us specifically to the next main characters, this book merely hints that there will be a sexy new Omega doctor coming to town and we will get her story. So I am very much looking forward to that. But for me this instalment was the best so far as it featured drama, suspense, humour, caring and a whole heap of sexual chemistry. The banter and sex that Red and Rainor produced is enough to set your Kindle on fire. This is the best in the series so far and I am almost sure that my statement is not made based on the bias I have given my love of Rainor. But either way I would recommend you give not only this book a try but the whole series. You will be pleasantly surprised because I know I was!

Saving the Omegas: The Legion Omegas Book 2 by Leann Ryans

Book Blurb:

Karn has already had a chance to win an omega, but he wasn’t interested. With what he did, an omega would just get in his way. He didn’t have the time to coddle some spoiled brat that would just distract him. He had a job to do.

Adaria was hired to find the omegas that had been taken by Largo’s men and free them. Raised by a master thief, she has skills most would never expect an omega to have. She doesn’t need an Alpha to save her, but she may need his help to stop the kidnapping for good.

This is a Sci-Fi Omegaverse story. Saving the Omegas is Book 2 in The Legion Omegas series. This book does not have a cliffhanger and can be read as a standalone, but will make more sense if read in order. This book has mature language and themes and is not intended for anyone under the age of 18.

My Review:

This is the second book in Leann Ryans Omegaverse all about strong Omegas who meet their mates but do everything they can to hold onto their own independence. As I mentioned in my review of the first book, I am not a massive expert on this genre but I know when I like a book or not. I enjoyed the first instalment and was expecting much of the same but if possible it was a little bit better.

Karn, one of the competitors that we met in The Omega Prize, is hired by Largo to discover who is stealing the Omega’s that he has kidnapped to sell. Karn agrees to be on board for the next shipment to investigate and he travels to all the planets as they collect the Omega’s ready to be sold. At the final planet he meets an interesting Omega that catches his eye and he can tell straight away that she is up to something but cannot work out what it is. He suspects that she may know how the escape will happen or who the rescuer actually is. But before Karn can find out and get the answers he needs the Omega’s escape. It is at this point that he realises the beautiful, strong Omega who caught his attention is far from the usual submissive Omega and is in fact the rescuer.

Adaria is a strong, independent Omega and is so far from what you would expect from the usual meek Omega. She was forced to become independent after losing her family at a very early age. She has deliberately chosen not to take on an Alpha as she does not want to submit to anyone. She was captured amongst one of Largo’s first Omega kidnapping runs and was able to rescue another Omega that she was with called Tilla. Coming from a rich family, Tilla’s family were very grateful for her safe return and offered Adaria money and a job guarding Tilla. She declines the money but accepted the job. However, then more Omega’s start going missing and their families turn to Adaria to get their females back. She is happy to help and with the support of Tilla’s father Frintak she begins rescuing Omegas. But on the latest mission she is almost distracted by the gorgeous, tall, strong Alpha on-board that she struggled to get out of her head.

After the rescue Adaria heads home and Frintak helps all the Omega’s find homes or passage back to their loved ones once it is safe to do so. Adaria agrees to stay with them to help settle in until safe to move but when her heat starts to come on she needs to nest and so heads back to her own home to be surrounded by her own things. Karn is still chasing the gorgeous, spunky Omega who outwitted them all and after sniffing her out she ends up back at her house. This causes more problems as an Alpha being near an Omega during her heat brings on a chemical reaction that they both cannot deny. Try as they might to just engage in just sex, the animal reaction takes over and two people who never wanted to be bonded to anyone end up mated together. But now they are faced with a problem as the person Karn needs to turn over to Largos to save his life has just become the one person he is now duty bound to protect.

The relationship that Karn and Adaria have is unusual but incredibly awesome to witness. Karn is funny, kind and strong. He loves been a mercenary and admits that it is no life to drag an Omega into which is why he has never mated, but once he does his entire outlook on life changes and he realises that there is more to life than work or the adrenaline rush he gets from fighting. Adaria is also a fighter in her own way and even when she becomes bonded to Karn she does not want to become the docile Omega that submits to his every word. She enjoys challenging him and tries to keep her own personality throughout which I loved. But she is more than happy to submit to him in the bedroom and boy are those scenes steaming hot and sizzling with chemistry.

This is the second book in the Legion Omega Series and I would highly recommend that you read the first book before this one. The characters featured in The Omega Prize are in this book and it would contain spoilers. Although you may be able to follow the plot you will get more out of it by reading them as a series. I enjoyed the catch up we got from Zander and Bree but what I loved more is that we got to see Rainer again as I loved the cocky, playful Alpha. So you can imagine my delight to find out that the next book will feature him and Red, one of the Omega’s that Adaria helps to rescue in this book. I absolutely loved Rainer and am so glad that he is getting his own book and from the glimpses we have seen of the fiery Omega Red I am sure it will be one hell of a book.

Overall, I loved this book and the more I dive into Leann Ryans Omegaverse the more that I love it. Karn is a brilliant, strong yet funny character and he more than met his match with the independent, stubborn Omega Adaria. Whilst their relationship may not have followed a traditional romantic path, it was normal within the Alpha/Omega world. It was great to watch their relationship develop after they bonded. The love and care that they have for each other and also the need to protect each other is beautiful. While neither of them wanted to be bonded to another, when it does happen they realise they are actually more than happy. I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for more!

The Omega Prize (The Legion Omegas Series Book 1) by Leann Ryans

Book Blurb:

Being an omega on a space station is risky. Especially on a station that has illegal activities hosted by your boss…and he decided you’d make a good prize for the Alphas…

“She felt his fingers on the back of her head, trailing lightly along her body all the way to the swell of her ass. She arched, trying to press up into his touch, but he removed his hand only to bring it down in a sharp slap against her bottom.
Brie jumped, more out of surprise than pain as he told her, “That was for growling at me. I don’t suggest you do it again, because next time you’re punishment will be much worse.”

This is Book 1 in the Sci-fi Omegaverse series, The Legion Omegas. This book does not end on a cliffhanger and can be read as a standalone. This book has mature content and is intended for an adult audience.

My Review:

Being an Omegaverse virgin means I really did not know much of what to expect from this book, meaning I went in with no expectations and a blank canvas. But still this book managed to surprise me. The Omega Prize is something very different from anything that I have ever read before, even thought I have read different types of paranormal romances, I have never read about Omega’s. Initially I was unsure if I liked the idea, particularly the more sci-fi aspect as that is not my normal genre, or if I would be able to keep up with the plot in general. But after a couple of chapters that soon passed and I am not ashamed to say that I was completely hooked. I literally could not stop reading this exciting first book from Leann Ryans.

Brie is an Omega who is destined to submit and mate with an Alpha during her time of heat. However, Brie is not your typical Omega and she does not want to submit to anyone. With the help of a friend she starts taking heat suppressant tablets to hide her true identity and this enables her to blend in and live as a Beta. This has been the case since she fled as a child and she has never had to experience her first heat, which would force her to experience the longing and need for an Alpha to mate and care for her. She is happy with her life the way it is, living on a space station and working with her best friend at a bar, but what she loves most is having her own freedom. However, all of that is about to come crashing down when her supply of heat suppression tablets starts to run out allowing her Omega status to flutter through and then she bumps into the first Alpha who has ever made her feel anything.

Zander is an Alpha who lives on a mining planet that he owns with his best friend and fellow Alpha Rainer. He is visiting the space station to sell his product and stock up on building supplies when he literally bumps into Brie at the market. He cannot explain why he is drawn to the beautiful, curvy Beta but he knows that he wants her. Zander follows her to the bar where she works and ends up getting into a fight with other Alpha’s who are vying for Brie’s attention. This starts off a series of events that will change both Zander and Brie’s lives forever.

Zander and Brie’s relationship is both unusual and captivating. They are thrust together in far from usual circumstances but that does not change the chemistry between them, if anything it enhances it. They feel a draw to each other that I have come to realise is so much more than that of normal Alpha and Omega. Brie is a great character and even though her nature is to be submissive she fights against that and is such a feisty strong personality. Zander’s character is also slightly different from the normal projection of an Alpha as he is extremely caring towards Brie. It is normal for him to have a protective nature and to want to control and dominate her but the feelings he has towards her mean that he has a more caring and loving side than is normally seen. These two make a great couple and the heat between them is scorching hot and sexy whilst also having a sweet, caring aspect too.

Overall, it has to be said that I loved this book so much more than I ever thought I would. Whilst I cannot say how this compares to other books in the Omegaverse, what I can do is compare the book to other books in the paranormal world and it more than holds its own. The journey their relationship takes is rocky but incredibly enticing. We are introduced to some great secondary characters and I really want Rainer to find his Omega, as I liked the aspects of his personality that we were shown. It has to be noted that there are some trigger elements in this book that some readers may find offensive and is not for everyone. This is the first book in the Legion Omega series and I know for sure I will be reading book two when it is released. This is a great first book by Leann Ryans and I am excited for more.

From Ashes and Embers (Ceasefire Series Book 3) by Claire Marta

Book Blurb:

She’s forbidden.
Temptation personified in a curvy package of sugar and sin.
My one job is to obey the rules.
Keep my dick in my pants and forget the new nanny.
Be a good little soldier as the Devil himself raised me to be.
Problem is I can’t.
I care more than I want to admit.
I’m not supposed to have a conscience. Blood stains my hands and taints my soul.
There’s no escaping the chains that bind us, when duty threatens to destroy us both.

My Review:

After the amazingly sexy adventures I had reading books one and two in this series, I did not expect to like this book as much. They always say that nothing lives up to the original, but that is not the case with this story as I actually loved it just that little bit more. In true Claire Marta fashion you will experience a rollercoaster of emotions and there are plot twists and secrets at every turn, making this book such a fantastic read. While the last two books focused on the story of Lucifer and Mavi, this one centres on Raziel and Jane.

Raziel is a Nephilim who has featured in the earlier books as the devils right hand man and his most trusted advisor. We hear all about Raz’s back story and how he came to be the hardened yet cocky fighter that he is. Raz was one of my favourite characters in previous books as I loved his chilled out, cocky nature. Even though he was unashamedly bad he still seemed to have a kind, caring streak that maybe even he didn’t want to acknowledge but it is particularly obvious when new girl Jane comes into the palace.

Jane is employed to be the nanny to baby Julianna and is obviously half Fae with her bright personality, rainbow hair and petite fairy like appearance. But there is a lot more to Jane than meets the eye and it is clear from the beginning that this friendly, cheerful girl who loves to bake has a lot more secrets than it appears. She is drawn to Raziel from the first time she meets him and their chemistry is obvious but they try to stay away from each other on the Devils order.

Both Raz and Jane have experienced pain and suffering in their past and both have been raised with no families. Raz was 10 years old when he sold his soul to Lucifer and became his greatest ally. Jane was taken in by her guardians after the tragic death of her parents and they raised her with only one goal and that is to bear the child of the man they believe to be the Devils son. Which is how she ends up with the task of seducing Raziel. What she does not expect is to fall in love and have everything she has ever believed about herself challenged.

Raz and Jane are two people who are bound by duty to the people that took them in and raised them. They have never challenged that until they find each other and discover that their allegiances shift to each other. The chemistry between them is palpable and the way Raz cares for Jane like she is vulnerable and breakable is so beautiful. They begin to crave each other and the sex between them is off the charts hot. It will get you hot under the collar and make you fall in love with Raz even more. What I loved most about this book is that it allows and actually encourages you to embrace your dark side. You get to support the dark side for once and will actually find yourself wanting the people who would normally be the villains of the story to win. The great thing about Claire Marta’s writing is that she does not adjust the characters to make them more likable. They are unapologetically evil and they do wicked, deplorable things but you will still find yourself rooting for them. Because even though this book is set in hell and normally Lucifer and his army would be cast as the baddies of the story, she writes the plot in a way that has you rooting for the devil. You will want him to slay his rivals and for evil to triumph, which for me is something very unique in a book. Claire triumphed when she wrote Raziel in my opinion and he is the best character that I have read about in a long time. This book is a little like a demon because it seduces you, gets under your skin and you will sell your soul for just that little bit more!

My Review:

Oh wow, I am not even sure I am well enough to write this review because I’m pretty sure I’m suffering from whiplash! There is more plot twists, lies, deception and surprises in this book than you could possibly expect. It draws you in, keeps you on your toes and has you addicted until the very end. This book picks up eight months after the cliff hanger ending of the first book. So if you have not read the first book then this review will contain major spoilers and you will need to read book one first.

After being decapitated during the final battle scene by her brother Nate whilst defending Lucifer, Mavi awakens with no knowledge of who she is or what happened and there are some pretty big surprises in store for her. She is being held captive by some low level demons who are abusing and raping her as their prisoner. She starts to have dreams remembering who she really is and dreams that draw her to Lucifer. When she finally remembers she escapes but is faced with many new battles.

Mavi believed that when she killed Trukun in the battle that she had defeated all of the generals of hell and could finally get her soul back from the Devil but it turns out that the general Markaz is not dead like they previously thought. Mavi knows that she has to kill Markaz if she ever wants to be free from Lucifer. But as things progress her reasons for chasing Markaz becomes a lot more personal and her desire to get away from Lucifer grows weaker.

The chemistry between Mavi and Lucifer is off the charts and it really is a case of that there is a fine line between love and hate. While Mavi wants to hate Lucifer and struggles to trust his behaviour she is drawn and enticed by him on a sexual level. The sex is just as scorching hot in this book as it is in the first. He appeals to Mavi’s innermost dark side and she flourishes when united with him but she also knows that Lucifer threatens all that she is and all the people she cares about the most. Mavi is faced with the challenge that she needs to beat the Devil at his own game or she will forever remain the Devil’s Plaything. I should note that there is a scene where they have sex in a church confessional and I know that not all readers will enjoy this.

As I mentioned at the beginning, this book features dramatic revelations at every turn and with every revealed secret things are flipped upside down. In my first review I said that I was just as drawn to the Devil as Mavi was but in this book, the more the storyline progressed, I started to dislike the Devil and did not like his scheming or his blatant disregard for other people. But I think that is very much how the Devil should be portrayed, as it made me believe that this is how the Devil would naturally behave, after all he is never going to be a natural leading man. His behaviour was completely unrepentant and that made him the perfect anti-hero that, I believe, Claire Marta was trying to portray. But even so I felt like he was perfect for Mavi and I was willing them to find their twisted, dark version of happily ever after.  But while my love for Lucifer was dwindling, luckily I had his gorgeous, dark and cocky right hand man Raziel to draw my attention. I loved him so much and I can’t wait to read his story in the next book.

But overall I want to say that I loved this book. It will grip you and pull you in. It will make you not want to stop reading to discover all the hidden secrets and give you whiplash when they are revealed. For the first time you will find yourself routing for the dark side to prevail and it will leave you wanting so much more. For me this book was fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend it.

The Devil You Know (Ceasefire Book 1) by Claire Marta

Book Blurb:

My name is Mavi StClair.
I’m a monster with a pretty face. An assassin in trade. Guilt, remorse, it’s never touched me. I’m as cold as they come and just as professional.
Dealing death has always come easily, and I inflict it with ease. It fuels and feeds the twisted darkness inside me.
My downfall begins with a single night of untamed passion leaving me hungering for more of him.
One wicked soul recognizing another.
Now he owns me.
The lines of what I know are blurred.
I’m playing his game.
A pawn, eternally tangled in a web of secrets and lies.
He won’t let me go.
Taking pleasure in my fall from grace.
Question is, can I save myself before I’m damned completely?

My Review:

This is the first time that I have sat down to write a review and I am not quite sure that I have the right words to describe how great this book actually is. I think the less you know about the actual plot the better as I enjoyed discovering things I was not expecting. This book is categorised as a paranormal romance but I am not entirely sure this sums it up as there was not a great deal of romance involved. When I started reading I did not know what to expect or whether I would enjoy the book but the more I read the more I realised that the characters and the plot were seeping into my veins and I was becoming addicted. I wanted to know the secrets of all the characters and I wanted to see where it was going to lead and I am so glad I did because this book is great.

Mavi is an assassin for the archangel Gabriel. She is a cold hearted, professional killer who does not show remorse. She knows that there is a darkness within her but does not fully embrace it, instead chooses to keep everyone at arm’s length. But all that changes one night when she meets the dark and mysterious Max. After a night of intense and frankly downright hot sex she is drawn to him despite the fact they are both clearly hiding secrets from each other. Max is dark and dangerous and a natural manipulator. He oozes sexual charisma and Mavi cannot help but be drawn to him.

This book takes place in a paranormal world that is about to turn upside down as the four generals of hell are rising up to overthrow the Devil from Hell. Ceasefire is the middle ground between the human world, heaven and hell and a balance exists where everyone knows the rules and the only rule is that you cannot kill anyone else. Angels, demons, shifters, werewolves, vampires and people with magic feature and the different way they are presented keeps you wanting to know more.

I loved Mavi’s no nonsense attitude and it was great to see such a strong heroine that was not afraid to embrace her bad side or her sexuality. Her uniqueness as a character lay in the fact she was both hero and villain, both seductress and enamoured, and this makes her not your typical heroine but I was still drawn to her. But Max was unbelievably hot even when his secrets and lies are exposed it was still impossible not to be sucked in to his world.

To say this book features shocking twist and turns is a massive understatement that does not do the plot of Claire Marta’s writing justice. However, at times I did find that I had to go back and re-read sections to fully understand what was happening and occasionally felt like the plot was a bit jumpy. But this is something that you can live with just to find out what happens next to the characters. The sex scenes are hot, steamy and downright dirty with a mild element of BDSM. But I should also point out that there a scenes that some readers may not enjoy and feature trigger elements which are not for everyone.  There are scenes of rape which I personally felt that Mavi did not react normally to and this was the only aspect of her character that I did not understand or relate to. It felt unbelievable for her not to have a reaction to her experiences.

There is sex, violence and lots of twists and turns in this fantastic paranormal read. But beware because it ends in one hell of a cliff-hanger that will have your head ready to explode and your fingers itching to see how quickly you can download the next book. I loved reading this book and cannot wait to see what happens next.
